About Portal Yoga

“I don’t have a name for my style of dancing.  It’s certainly hybrid.  I’ve borrowed from the modern dance, the classical, and certainly from the American Folk Dance – tap dancing. Jitterbugging.  But I have tried to develop a style which is indigenous to the environment in which I was reared.” – Gene Kelly (for more about Gene click HERE and HERE)

ABOUT PORTAL YOGA

Like the American dancer Gene Kelly, Portal is certainly a hybrid.  As a student certain methods and systems were imparted to me, but I learned most from individuals, not styles.  It was their spirit that informed me, first and foremost.  And like all good teachers, they encouraged me to road test and go my own way with all they gifted me.  I have done my best to develop in a way that is not only indigenous to the environment in which I was raised, but also in a way that also reflects the present.  To paraphrase Bucky Fuller, I am just trying to find patterns of nature that work.  I teach a flexible, elastic program.  I work with what shows up.  For me, it’s about being present as a teacher and dealing with the energy in the room.

I used to say, “I don’t have a name for my style of yoga.”  First off, it’s not ‘my style’. It belongs to Universe.  If I did have to call it a name, I would say it is the style of ‘no style’ in a Zen sense.  But my marketing people said, “No style is no name, and we need a name.”  The solution came as a waking dream in which I was directed to ‘guide as many people through portals as possible’.  A portal is doorway through which one can be both transported and transformed, as well as transcend time/space and be delivered to other Worlds.  So I have named the practice, ‘Portal Yoga’.  It is less “yoga” and more of a “yoga-based movement.” Practicing it consistently provides the opportunity to move from:

CAN’T DO to CAN DO
CONFUSION to CLARITY
PROBLEM to SOLUTION
CLOSED to OPEN
FATIGUED to ENERGIZED
HOPELESSNESS to POSSIBILITY
WEAKNESS to STRENGTH
APATHETIC to INSPIRED
NUMB to FEELING
HEAVY to LIGHT
ELMER FUDD to BUGS BUNNY
